During the summer, I got a text from my youngest daughter.
The words were simple, but they hit me hard:
“Daddy… are we in war?”
She had just read about rising tensions overseas in the Apple News app. She was nervous. Unsure. And truthfully—she was scared.
As her father, I could feel the weight behind her question. This wasn’t just something to brush off. It was an opportunity—an opportunity to lead, to teach, and to comfort her with truth. Not just my truth, but God’s truth.
So I wrote her a letter.
I told her that since being born in 1981, I’ve lived through multiple wars—The Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq. Each season was scary in its own way. But through it all, God protected us. I’m still here, not because the world was peaceful, but because God was faithful.
I reminded her of Jesus’ promise in John 14:27 (CSB):
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.”
Our peace doesn’t come from politicians, headlines, or the absence of conflict. It comes from the Prince of Peace Himself.
As she prepared to head off to overnight camp, I encouraged her to walk with confidence, joy, and integrity. I wanted her to remember that she has an opportunity to be a light among her peers—even in uncertain times.
Maybe you can relate. Maybe you’re trying to figure out how to help your kids—or even yourself—stay grounded in a world that often feels unstable.
If so, let me encourage you: this is our moment to point the next generation back to God. We can guide them through the storm with calm voices, truth-filled responses, and a steady reliance on Scripture.
I even put together a list of the verses I shared with my daughter—passages to help anchor her heart in God’s promises. You can download that list here:

Let these verses comfort your children—and you.
A Challenge for You
When your child asks hard questions, what story are you telling them? One of fear and confusion—or one of faith and trust in a sovereign God?
You don’t need all the answers. But you can anchor your home in the truth that God is still in control. His peace surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7), and that’s the peace we get to lead with.
